I’m old, I’m tired, and I went to a rock show last night (part I).

March 16, 2012

Consider last night a maybe chased. My first South by Southwest record label-sponsored rock show = a mission accomplished.

[Oh, and all that chasing has left me exhausted.]

Many jaded Austinites, it should be noted, avoid downtown Austin like it’s on fire during South by Southwest (heretofore known as SXSW), the internationally renowned media/film/music festival that overtakes the city every spring.  The traffic is insurmountable, the street closures are mystifying, and each block is overrun with beautiful/young/insanely hip/ironically dressed/intoxicated nomads from all corners of the globe.  The week is both a circus of fascinating people and a total inconvenience, all wrapped up in skinny denim and sporting a pair of horn-rimmed glasses.

Still, when our friend Billy (who manages the North Carolina-based record label Yep Roc Records) invited us to the label’s showcase last night, Steve and I had to go.  Billy’s family lived two doors down from us for several years and are wonderful people.  We wanted to see him, and — as a bonus — we looked forward to hearing some new music and delving into the SXSW abyss.  I should admit that since arriving in Austin in August, Steve and I haven’t seen nearly enough live music , and Yep Roc boasts some intriguing artists.  We were excited to go.

Sitter booked, we ventured downtown… two thirty-somethings approaching the nearly unrecognizable city of their first meeting light years ago in 1997.

Hint:  It was fun.

More on Monday.  Until then, I wish you nothing but fascinating adventures and impossibly late nights.  Thanks, as always, for showing up.

Oh, goody. I haven’t read anything from anyone who’s been this year, so I’m looking forward to your post. I really dislike crowds anymore, so I’m glad you’re braving the masses for us.

Thanks, Barb! I will get the post up tonight or tomorrow a.m. — we’re having some weather here now, so might have to shut things down until the morning. We saw some fantastic music, but navigating the masses truly did require bravery. It was madness!
